What Year Did Harley-Davidson® Start Fuel Injection?

Although the first fuel-injected motorcycle was introduced back in 1980, it would take until 1995 for Harley-Davidson® to offer electronic fuel injection on a single model and until 2008 for it to fully replace the carburetor in the H-D® lineup. The fact that carburated bikes were the industry standard until relatively recently can be hard to believe when you look at the motorcycles manufactured today, nearly all of which use electronic fuel injection.

So, why did it take so long for EFI to replace carburetors? Most bikes simply didn't generate enough electrical power to support an EFI system, and it just took some time for the technology to catch up.

What Was the First Bike With Harley-Davidson® Electronic Fuel Injection?

1995 was the year that Harley-Davidson® started fuel injection for the first time, offering it as an optional upgrade for the Electra Glide® 30th-Anniversary Edition. All Twin Cam Touring, Dyna®, and Softail® models followed suit with standard EFI in 2007. At that time, you could still buy a bike with an old-school carburetor rather than Harley-Davidson® electronic fuel injection; the Sportster® series still offered the carbureted Evolution engine. The era ended for good in 2008 when the Sportster® line switched over to an EFI system.

How Does Harley-Davidson® Electronic Fuel Injection Work?

In a carburetor, the correct mixture of air and fuel must be set manually and can't be adjusted while you ride in Conyers. A Harley-Davidson® electronic fuel injection system is controlled by a switchboard that analyzes engine load, speed, riding conditions, engine temperature, throttle response, and other factors. It then uses this information to dynamically determine the fuel fixture and the precise moment to inject fuel into each cylinder.

The result? Cleaner engine performance and better fuel economy on Cartersville roads and highways.
